Saving Energy with LED Lighting
The American Lighting Association (ALA) offers guidance on using LED lighting and bulbs to save energy in your home, centering on a few practical strategies.
1. Focus on Lumens, Not Watts
ALA emphasizes that traditional incandescent bulb fixtures trained us to look at wattage (which measures energy consumed). With energy-efficient LEDs, you should look at lumens (which measure actual brightness/light output).
- An LED bulb can provide the same light output (lumens) as an old 60-watt incandescent bulb while consuming only 8 to 12 watts of electricity.

2. Matching LEDs to the Three Layers of Lighting
To maximize energy efficiency without sacrificing comfort, ALA recommends applying LED technology to the three fundamental layers of residential lighting:
- Ambient Lighting (General): Replacing central ceiling fixtures or recessed "can" lights with LEDs. Since these lights stay on the longest, swapping them provides the fastest drop in your electricity bill.
- Task Lighting: LEDs are inherently directional, meaning they naturally emit light in a specific direction rather than scattering it. This makes them exceptionally efficient for under-cabinet kitchen lighting, reading areas, and desks, allowing you to light only the workspace rather than the entire room.
- Accent Lighting: Using low-wattage LED strips or spotlights to highlight artwork or architectural features without generating excess heat.

3. Managing the "Kelvin Scale" (Color Temperature)
A common barrier to switching to energy-efficient bulbs used to be the cold, blue light of early LEDs. ALA highlights that modern residential-grade LEDs offer a wide range of color temperatures measured in Kelvin (K):
- For living rooms and bedrooms, look for 2700K to 3000K (Soft/Warm White) to match the cozy, yellow glow of traditional incandescent bulbs.
- For kitchens, home offices, and bathrooms where task clarity is important, look for 3500K to 4000K (Bright/Cool White).
4. Pair with Controls for Maximum Savings
To compound your energy savings, ALA strongly advocates pairing LED bulbs with compatible dimmers, timers, or occupancy sensors. Dimming an LED not only customizes the mood of a room but drastically slashes its already low power consumption and extends the lifespan of the bulb even further.
A Note on Longevity: Traditional bulbs waste roughly 90% of their energy as heat. Because LEDs run remarkably cool, they last anywhere from 15,000 to 50,000 hours – meaning a single bulb can easily last 15 to 20 years in a typical household.
